【Guides】Learn Popping By Yourself

Hey guys, Im Kye923 from Malaysia.
I start learning Popping by internet on June 2007
I know learning by yourself is kinda hard.
You need to search the Popping Knowledge by yourself
And You must DOUBLE Hardworking


So, here's some tips from me for the poppers who want to learn by themself.

1. Watch Tons Of Videos
For beginner, they can start watching the performance video
You can learn or imidate a set of moves from the video ( For me,when i started im learnt the Winners Performance video)
Later on, when u start trying to freestyle
You should watch the battle videos, see how's the popper dance to the beat, dance to the music

Recommended:Download those popping performance & battle video. Watch it, Learn It~


2. Always Listen To The Popping Music
Normal the beginner like to listen the Poppin Music that have many sound effect 1 ( Included Me), such as: DJ Andren - Beatronic, Herbie Hancock - Rock and etc. However, you need to listen to other types of music, such as Funk & Talkbox.

For Beginner, you can search Slick Dogg's track. Many song of him are suitable for practice.
Other Recommended: Zapp & Roger, Cameo, The Bar-Kays, Art Of Noise

Technique:
(I.)Watch those battle & performance videos on youtube, you will know more Poppin Tracks
(II.)Check The Comments That Leaved By Other People, They Maybe Know The Track's Name
(III.)If Not, You Can Leave A Comment


3. Always Ask Question
When you face some problems, just ask it on forum ( For Example, Here:))


4. Always Discuss With Other Poppers
They can correct your mistake and give some advices to you.


5. Recorded Your Practice Video & Uploaded It To Youtube
Get a Digital Camera and recorded your practice. Uploaded it to Youtube monthly and ask other poppers to give critique & advice.
It Really Helpful~


6. Practice In Front Of Mirror
Mirror is IMPORTANT for a popper. You need to correct your angle infont of the mirror.
If you are rich, you can buy a large mirror:)


7. Learn Together With Your Friends
You will not feel boring and you guys can perform to get experince


8. Read Popping Articles

I kind of disagree with some points. Its good to watch videos and learn the basics from youtube, but in my opinion its better to try to refrain from imitating too much moves from battles posted online. Its better to be original, especially nowadays where everyone can imitate moves because of the internet. There isn't a wax on or wax off to popping definitely, it can only be sharpened by practicing.

I have to admit though that I've come to idolize some poppers such as pacman and I catch myself trying to imitate his moves. Instead of doing so, I try and innovate on moves I take/copy. I do agree however on watching videos because you can definitely see some popping styles you've never seen before.

-Tutting-
I'd also like to add an interesting way to make new tutting patterns. Basically you and a friend face each other and try and make new patterns. While one person is tutting, the other is watching. The person that's watching stops the person that's tutting at random points and shows the person a different way of commencing his pattern and then vice-versa. This really helps with creativity with tuts because two minds are greater than one

we cant just copy/imidate move from vids, but we need practice more and create our own move/style

but i saw mr wiggIes tmenu vol.9, he teach many routines in studio

i done a 6 weeks course of street dancing/poppin on tuesday but then after that there were no more
so i have been teaching my self
it is hard but i just get on with it
i hope to get my own unikenes in my dancing soon

i watched various of people including Mike song Tony Tran and anthony lee

im not saying tyo bite their moves , but watch the way they match the beat and the words of the song ;D
